Axel Vervoordt
Wednesday, October 8, 2008 Axel Vervoordt is the darling of the antiques world and has sold to Bill Blass, Sting, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Getty Museum, and scores of other high flyers. Vervoordt is a tastemaker whose interiors propelled the Belgium trend in design — flaxen fabrics, grayed hues, rough-hewn woods, stone floors. Here are photos of the Vervoordt home, a 50-room castle near Antwerp, and the family multi-disciplinary design business, a network of 19th Century warehouses and grain silos designed by his son.

Considering the superb antiques and art within his reach, Vervoordt’s interiors are surprisingly simple. His belief is that rooms should feel real and authentic. He avoids fashion and strives for a universal feeling. He often uses the Flemish word “volledig” — which means both full and empty — to describe his interior design aesthetic.

rustic and modern, nice!
Totally agree. Sometimes a Vervoordt room contains only old, old pieces — and yet it still projects a modern feel. Love it. -susieq
